General Hospital: Why Jason Should Lose his Memory

Message boards are all a’twitter about Robin leaving again via kidnapping-by-Crazed--Supervillain, for the third—yes count ’em— third time.  This time, Helena has captured Robin to use her abilities for evil…or whatever it is that Helena has planned, whomever she wants to unfreeze, bring back the dead, torture.  Helena’s bucket list must be something, that’s all I’ve got to say.  But seriously, has anyone ever in the history of soaps been kidnapped as much as Robin?

What amazes me, though, is the (the smoosh name for Patrick and Robin) fans who seem to want them together so badly that they don’t care if loses his job, as long as it means Scrubs walks off the screen together.  has moved on to aspirations of directing and isn’t available for full-time work at GH, so the directing and writing team look for ways to bring her back when they can.  They’ve established Patrick believing that Robin has abandoned them, Anna believes Robin is facing PTSD and so the stage is set for Patrick to stay on screen and move on.  (And it’s no secret that I enjoy SamTrick.)  I get why fans of the couple aren’t happy — it’s definitely not a happy “ending” for Scrubs, but it isn’t an ending either.  “End game” means when it’s over, when it’s done — and I’m hopeful that General Hospital will be around for a long time to come.  So in all that time in between, I want to see Patrick move on, I want to see him used in a great story, matched with a great woman and given more to do than wonder when or if Robin will return.  I want good story.

I think Robin’s kidnapping this time feeds into that good story in a HUGE way.  Jason also made his way back to Port Charles with Robin, but through a chain of events that could only be written on a soap, he managed to get his by Ava’s car and is currently en route to General Hospital.  But that is such soapy goodness.   The ONLY person who knows the truth about Robin is Jason.  That’s it.

So the perfect foil for that?  Take away that memory.  Given that they have to work with Kimberly McCullough’s availability, I think they’ve set this up perfectly for more story when they can bring her back for a while.  Jason’s memory holds serious, serious information about Robin.  And for now, if that is locked up tight in a forgotten place, that memory becomes a ticking time bomb.  Memory-less Jason (Better than Headless Jason) will settle into Port Charles, healing, probably getting a new face and making “new” connections with people (rumors are he’s been taping a lot with Liz). His story begins and builds, and through all of it, we know he’s the key to some very, very valuable information.  We know that the truth of his identity will rock the town in a big way.

When his memory returns, I want to see everything at stake because of it.  I want to see his new Memory-less Jason relationships shifted upside down, I want to see Jason realize that Robin is gone and know that it’s not because she wants to be.  And when that happens, everything should be heightened.  Patrick and Sam could potentially be in a deeper relationship that could explode from the truth of who Jason is and what he knows.  Whoever Jason has gotten close to will be in jeopardy in that time frame.

From a story perspective, I see so much potential in those moments ahead because of this twist.  I think this was the perfect setup to building Jason’s story arc and I can’t wait to see the rubble that forms around the explosion when it comes back.

I hear you, sister! I want a good, soapy story and headless-Jason being made road kill by Ava was FANTASTIC! I want Jason to awaken a Q again, with no memory of Jason Morgan. Then, slowly, as NuJason realizes what a stone cold killer the once doctor-to-be had become, I want Billy Miller to again show off his acting chops by revealing an emotional Jason capable of shame and grief. There is so much to be written in this story and I want it all!

And as for the Scrubs fans who would rather Jason Thompson be unemployed, let’s play “what if.” What if Robin was recast? Scrubs still wouldn’t live happily-ever-after (soap couples rarely do on-screen) and Scrubs have been through the ringer – does anyone remember the reincarnations of Lisa Niles? 1.0/2.0/3.0 – I’ve lost count.

Honestly, the day our favorite couples live without angst means one thing – the story is over (either with our favorite actors leaving the show or the show being cancelled). I don’t want the story/show to end. So, I will stick with the ups and downs/highs and lows grateful that my favorite soap remains on the air (except when ABC news pre-empts it for an NFL presser – grrrrrr).

Great post, Jeannie! 😉

I haven’t wanted GH in years, but it’s one that you can definitely go back to at any time. I’ve been missing a lot apparently. I loved the 1st? Robin and Jason romance and I think I’ve wanted to hold onto that… but no couple has a long term HEA in soaps 🙂 thanks for an awesome post!

Hi Erin— ITA. Soap couples aren’t made for the long haul. Heck, look at the state of super couples these days (hmm, I sense another post coming from that… lol)
