Quick and Free Promotional Steps for Small Press Authors

by Jeannie Ruesch

Promotion doesn't always have to be about money, sometimes it's about being in the right place at the right time. And that can include taking advantage of some free promotional opps around the web.  Here are just some of the considerations any author can take advantage of… and for the ones I specifically list for Small Press authors, there is usually other genres open as well.

Romantic Times BookReviews Website Forums — Small Press Spotlight

This is a thread on the RT forums specifically for Small Presses.  It's meant for you to introduce yourself, your book to their readers… and it's woefully underutilized. Why???  It's free, it's a great audience and …well, there really isn't a reason you shouldn't have a post here.  Hie your fingers over to this link and plug in your book.  NOW.

Add Your Book to the American Booksellers Association dabatase

From their site: Your title isn't listed in the ABA E-Commerce Database? E-mail us your information (see details below) and we'll add it to the database. This is a free service.

How to Participate:
Send an e-mail with ISBN, Title, Author, Publisher Pub. date, Binding type, Price, and BISAC code or genre.

Small Press Group on the LibraryThing.com website

This group is dedicated to small presses, and as of my last check to grab the URL, there were TWO –count 'em — TWO posts there.  Join the Group and make some noise.

Another group: The Romance from Historical to Contemp Group

Amazon Lists

Here is a list I found on amazon of The Best in Small Press Romance.  Create your own list of books you've enjoyed, get together with other authors and swap book placement on lists, or create a list of new Small Press romances. You can include your own book on your list.

Author Directories
Look for websites that focus on romance and offer author directories. Email them to get your name added to their directory.  Example: Night Owl Romance

Your Profiles at various sites
Your profiles can lead to clicks… so for every place you comment on blogs, such as wordpress, or every website you join a group in, such as Shelfari, be sure that you take five minutes to add some images, content and interest to your profile. You never know who will be clicking on them.

These are just a few ideas, but hopefully ones you'll use.

Jeannie ,
Thanks for the information. I sent off an email to the author list at my publisher as I’m sure they’ll appreciate it as much as I do. Are you going to re-post it Monday. (see coming Events)? If so I’ll try to promote it around on other lists. I’ve got to run right now.

Hi Lavada, Thanks! I’m glad you find it useful. Nope, I’m going to find a new topic for Monday… Today’s got posted as we had a back-end glitch and I needed to get a post up today. πŸ™‚ But I will continue the theme on what small press authors can do for promotion that may cost time, but not so much on the money. πŸ™‚
