Kicked Out Of the Sandbox

I am not allowed to play with the other girls in the Golden Heart sandbox this year.  My Golden Heart entry–slaved over, copied and printed with care, mailed (and then mailed again when I forgot the CD with the full on it)–was disqualified.  So to help others learn from my disappointing mistakes, I thought I'd post my stupidity for you to enjoy.

Why was my brilliant prose disqualified, you ask?  Page numbers.

To be specific, I put them on the bottom of the page and not the top.  Apparently, I have worked too long in marketing where every piece of material I've ever created put page numbers at the bottom of the page.  It's second nature. It did not even occur to me to place them at the top.  When someone says "headers," I take that to mean top and bottom.  Don't ask me why, but I never think of the word "footer."  Obviously, I need to go back to school.

So all the necessary elements were there on the page.  Just not in the right quandrant of it.  And yes, that does disqualify an entry.  When they say header, they mean the upper one inch of your page.  And time, money and effort be damned if it's not there!

So, please…when you submit to the Golden Heart, take their instructions to the letter.  Remove any preconceived notions you might have about where page numbers go (or is that just me?) and pretend if you don't follow every single letter of their explanation and copy it verbatim, you won't be allowed to eat chocolate until the next Golden Heart entry time.

Any kind. Not Milk. Not White. Not Dark. Not even chocolate ice cream.

Nada.

Maybe if I'd done that, my entry would actually be in the contest this year.
