Last season, my top favorite new show was #The Blacklist, and Raymond #Reddington, the enigmatic character played by #James Spader, is 100% of the reason. James Spader is brilliant in any role, but the personality, the humanity that he brings to this…what is Reddington anyway? Protagonist? Antagonist? Hero? Villain? He’s all rolled up into one, but not quite any of the above.
We’ve been watching Season 1 to get ready for the September 22nd premiere, and falling in love with this show all over again. Reddington is a character I strive as a writer to create —that one that stays with you long after you’ve finished the show (or book), the not-so-good guy who doesn’t have a heart of gold, but does have a strict standard to which he adheres to.
He kills the man in his organization who betrayed him, but promises to take care of the man’s family, whatever they need. And Red means it. You never doubt it for one second that he will fold that man’s family under his trench coat.
I <3 Red, because he’s one of the best written characters I’ve ever seen. What do you love about the show?

Yes, yes and yes! James Spader has always been one of my favorite actors – loved him on The Practice & Boston Legal but he is absolutely INCREDIBLE as Red on The Blacklist. It isn’t easy to portray such a complex character yet James Spader does so effortlessly. How was he not nominated for an Emmy?
