COVER REVEAL: How a Control Freak Cover Artist Dealt with Someone Else Designing HER Cover

by Jeannie Ruesch

I’m thrilled to be able to reveal the gorgeous cover for CLOAKED IN DANGER.  The artists and marketing team at Carina Press did an amazing job – I love the colors, the backdrop, the woman in motion… all of it.

And frankly, I’m not a very easy gal to please when it comes to covers.  As some of you have figured out, I’m also a cover artist for another publisher as well as individual authors.  So I know what goes into a cover, I know what it takes to find that right look, the right message, evoke the right emotions…  which all means that I could probably be like a doctor who needs medical attention when it comes to someone else creating MY book cover.

A pain in the you-know-what.

The cover art form, where they ask the author all sorts of questions about their thoughts on the cover, was 4 pages long.  Yup.  That was me.  (Sorry to the amazing artist who got it, but you rock!)  Then I spent months being my usual neurotic self.  I knew I loved Carina’s covers.  I also admit to being a wee bit of a control freak.  (Shhh..don’t tell my husband.)  So cover artist control freak giving up control of her cover? Yeah.

Took lots of this:

cider

And before you look at me like I’m nuts, yes, that is sparkling cider and yes, I realize it doesn’t have any alcohol in it.  But it makes me happy. My hubby buys it for me and calls it my crack. What can I say.

But the cover, right?  Yup… so after the art form, the excuses for eating badly,  I got my cover.  And I have to say that the peeps at Carina Press took my thoughts, fine-tuned it with that Carina Press/Harlequin brilliance and gave me a cover the leaps off that page. (At least I think so…)

So without further ado:

Isn’t it pretty? I’m in love with the colors.  And yup, the designer in me considered redoing my entire site to match.  But only for a day.  Okay, so maybe I did attempt a design…. but anyway.  Love the cover? I know I do.  I hope you love the book, too.  I loved my spunky heroine, Aria, and of course Adam— the brother of Blythe from Something About Her.

Adam and Aria’s Story:

Aria Whitney has little in common with the delicate ladies of London society. Her famous father made his fortune hunting archaeological treasures, and her rustic upbringing has left her ill prepared for a life of parties and frippery. But when Gideon Whitney goes missing in Egypt, Aria must embrace the unknown. Armed with only the short list of highborn men who’d backed her father’s venture, she poses as a woman looking for a husband. She doesn’t intend to find one.

Adam Willoughby, Earl of Merewood, finds London’s strangest new debutante fascinating, but when he catches her investigating his family’s secrets, he threatens to ruin her reputation. He doesn’t intend to enjoy it so much.

When their lustful indiscretion is discovered, Adam finds that he regrets nothing. But now, as Aria’s father’s enemy draws near, Adam must convince his betrothed that she can trust him with her own secrets…before it’s too late.
