Have you ever tried to dictate your work instead of typing?
That will be my new challenge every day as I embark on a brand-new driving commute. I’m trading in my hour and 15 minute train/walk commute for a one hour and 30 minute driving commute. But at least now I get coffee. ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕ ( In the cruelest of commuting jokes, BART – the train into San Francisco doesn’t allow food or drink.)
And no, for those of you who know me, that is not why I took the new job. (It was, however, on the pro and con list.)
So now that I have an hour at least each way in my car, I have to entertain myself and find a way to make the time useful.
So this is my first blog post talking to my app. Right now I’m at my desk in my office and not yet in the car where I’m sure this will make me look like a crazy person. But then again most everybody on the commute probably looks like a crazy person.
I’m using the app called Dragon Anywhere, which was easy to sign up for online and then install the app on my phone. So far the dictation seems pretty easy. It captures pretty well. You can speak out the punctuation so the app knows exactly what you mean. You can also change words directly through dictation which is pretty cool. Although the translations aren’t always exact. I fully expect that there will be some editing required before any post goes live.
One of the things I was excited to see is that I can sync any notes that I dictate here into Evernote, which is kind of my personal brain dump. Every blog post I write starts generally in Evernote. I’m finding it’s not so difficult to just talk out loud to the app but I’m really curious to discover how well I can do this when with my fiction.
Do you use a dictation app to write? posts? notes? your books? I would love to know your experience if you do.
