Friends, Readers and Leopard-Skin Slippers
Recently my chapter’s newsletter posed a question to its members, “What part of being a writer are you most thankful for?” and one of the most common responses was “The people you meet.” I couldn’t agree more.
So with Thanksgiving next week, I’m going answer that question, “What about being a writer am I thankful for?”
1. My critique partners – I’m sure no one here would argue that finding the right critique partners are like gifts from God. What other person(s) can make you cry, demand you work harder, tempt you pull your hair from your head and yet have you want to bow at their feet for doing so? Yes, it takes a long time to get to that point, but when you do, it’s something to treasure.
2. My readers – As an unpublished writer, I don’t have many of them, but there’s nothing quite like hearing the words “Wow, this is awesome!” Whether it be from a CP, friend or sister-in-law who’s shocked you wrote the story.
3. My leopard-skin slippers – Most days I do have to get up and do the mom thing, but there are days when I don’t even get dressed. I love those days. And don’t let anyone tell you there’s something ‘wrong’ with you because you take a nap during the day. We’re writers. We think outside the box. Normal is boring to us.
4. RWA -In the face of the huge controversy surrounding Harlequin right now (yes, I went there:) I’m thankful for the sense of community from other writers and their (our) organizations. Now matter what the outcome, it’s good to know we’re not alone.
5. Helping others - Sounds lame, right? But it’s true. I love helping fellow writers reach their goals. Whether they’re on the same level with me, below or above, we can learn something from everyone.
What are you thankful for? Be it incredibly sweet, serious or just plane silly, I’d love to hear about it.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I have so much to be thankful for! My family, close friends, friends I’ve made through the internet, the readers of my blog who have become friends (and fans!), the wonderful writers I’ve met who are always willing to lend an ear or offer advice when asked, and the terrific writers here at Happy Endings! I’m also thankful for my imagination, my fuzzypups and the lolcat who keep me company while I play in my worlds. And I must thank Iffy, my wonderful (if exasperating) Muse and TR, my inner editor.
Happy Thanksgiving! I plan on nomming turkey sandwiches, pumpkin pie, and watch Bedlam football!
I’m thankful for all the things you and Silver note. Well except for the leopard skin slippers but I love not getting dressed in the morning. PJ’s rule. And, I’m thankful for Abby (Abigail) a very spoiled naughty lovable Jack Russell who rules her world.
At night just before sleep claims the scene I think of the world outside mine and give a very heartfelt thanks for all the love I have surrounding me.
