Since Jeannie’s been talking about branding the last few weeks, I’m chiming in with a post about branding for the multi-genre writer.  She mentioned this briefly in her blog at RomanceUniversity.org but I thought I would expand on this particular aspect of the branding discussion just a little further.
So, are you the kind of writer that doesn’t want to be pegged down to a particular trope? Do you like to try one thing and then switch the next book on its ear and do something completely different?
If you’re a new …

I was going to prepare something better for this blog, but I ran out of time. This article (for lack of a better word) was already typed up nice and neat, waiting to be used on my own blog.
And so now, the blogging will commence.
I have to write to music. It probably goes back to when I first started writing. When I was twelve, my mother had the only computer in the house and it was kept in the living room. The living room also contains the TV (like I …

About two weeks after my last post I got partial edits back on Fear of Darkness. I have an ‘I’ problem. Since I write in first person my sentences tend to begin with ‘I’, which makes the writing feel unemotional. Now, I knew I had this problem. My critique group has commented on it before and I’ve tried to fix it. Obviously, I didn’t have much luck. I still haven’t found a really good way of getting most of them. At least now I know it’s a major problem so …

I just submitted my second novel to Red Rose Publishing. I’m (im)patiently awaiting a response. I’m playing to waiting game that every writer plays. I’m waiting for edits for my last story and (hopefully) a contract for this new one. Writers are always waiting. Waiting for rejections or acceptances. Waiting for edits.
The best thing to do when you’re waiting on these things is to start a new project. I’ve done that, but it doesn’t make the waiting any easier. Every time I open my email account I’m like “Please, let …

The first rule of being a writer is to write. To actually sit your butt in the chair and do. This is a rule I have a little problem with. Lately, I need some super glue and some chair straps so I can’t get away. Oh, and no Internet connection. I’ve got some self-control issues and a short attention span. Once I actually start writing and get in the flow I’m fine, but getting there has been a big problem lately. But I digress. I am going to talk about …

Oops. I almost forgot that this was my day!
I just finished the first draft of my second novel on March 31st and I’ve moved on to edits. Today I was editing chapter three and when I reached the end of the critique this is what I found:
“I LOVE the story, but think you need to put more description, more passion into the telling. The reading feels like the characters are talking about taking out the garbage. I know you have this in your writing; I’ve read it from you before. …

Did anyone watch the series premier of Dollhouse on FOX? How many of you watched the second episode? If you didn’t then I imagine you aren’t alone. I almost didn’t watch the second one, but it was great. The series should have started with that episode. It was the hook. It put you in those characters heads and explained things about the series that you should have gotten in the first episode.
These days everyone wants instant gratification. If you want to keep a reader (or a watcher) you’ve got …

So much has happened since the last time I posted. First I got a Twitter. Now this isn’t the big news but it’s just so fun. When I first heard about Twitter I thought it was a stupid idea but it’s actually really fun. But be warned, if you get one it will suck up all your time. I don’t think I did anything but hang out on Twitter the first week I had it. It was pitiful.
I think it’s a good idea for authors to get one. You …

I’ve noticed that most writers do a lot of research before they title a book or name a character. Also, a lot of writers have problems coming up with names and titles. I’ve never had that problem. Usually names and titles just come to me as I start the story. Occasionally I’m stuck for a character name because I don’t want to use something common, but to solve this I just go to babynames.com and browse the names.
What is funny about my work in progress is I accidentally picked a …

I really wasn’t sure what I would write about in this post. When I agreed to do this the importance of a critique group automatically came to mind because of the problems I’d seen in some other groups.
The only thing that comes to mind when I sit down to write today is the fact that I have nothing to write about. I don’t necessarily mean on this blog either. I am hopelessly blocked on the novel I’m working on. Ever work on something and it’s going really good but then …
