Outrageous Heroes: Michael Ashton, Duke of Ravensdale

by Jeannie Ruesch

Just last week, Outrageous Heroes (on Facebook)  included Michael Ashton, the Duke of Ravensdale — hero from SOMETHING ABOUT HER — among their Outrageous heroes.

Why?

He’s a duke embroiled in two scandals!
Duke’s involved in scandals are very outrageous. Tell us more!

Happy to!  Thanks for the mention.  And it tickles me that being considered “outrageous” would send Ravensdale to the spirits.  That is the LAST thing he wishes to be considered.  His overwhelming sense of honor and his incredible desire to not perpetuate his parents’  scandalous past puts him in the situation of always feeling the need to behave exactly according to what’s expected of him.  He takes his position very seriously, to his own detriment at times.

In SOMETHING ABOUT HER, Michael is caught in two scandals— and he’s desperate to keep them under control.  His cousin, Thomas Ashton, has fleeced a number of gentlemen out of great sums of money and it’s up to Michael to set things to rights.  However, when he learns that his “dead” cousin may not be as dead as believed, he goes in search of answers—and finds Thomas’s widow Blythe.

The other scandal Michael faces is that of a young woman who claims he spoiled her and fathered her unborn child.  For a man who has lived a careful life,  not wishing to create any scandal whatsoever, he’s smack in the middle of two of them.

Michael Ashton was a really fun hero to write.   One of the things I enjoy writing in characters is how their flaws and virtues can be counter productive at times.   Flawed characters are so much more interesting, and Michael’s determination to be as different from his parents as possible causes him to make decisions that hurt those he loves.

Who is the most flawed character you’ve ever read?
