Retreat at the Beach…

by Jeannie Ruesch

After a glorious weekend spent talking and working with other writers, watching and hearing the waves of the ocean nearby, and focusing entirely on something I love, all I can say about today: It’s Monday.

*sigh*Β  This weekend was the retreat put on by a local RWA Chapter (Sacramento Valley Roseamazing women) with Margie Lawson as the guest workshop speaker.Β  We dug into her EDITS system and body language and had ourselves a grand ol’ time.Β  Not only was it my first taste of re-immersion into my writing again, it was so incredibly helpful.Β  Margie’s EDITs system is one of the best things out there – I can’t recommend it enough. It will change your writing.Β Β  Her system helps you to see on every page what your story is missing.Β  If you’d like a hint of what her deep-editing is like, she has about 25 of them on her website here.Β Β  Next week, I’ll take a few pictures of my highlighted pages and show you the torture. πŸ™‚

Margie is opening up her “Lawson’s Writer’s Academy” on her website — and upcoming on June 9th and 10th is the grand opening – prizes and more.Β Β  Definitely check it out and while you are there, look at her lecture packets — the goodies from her classes if there isn’t one soon enough to suit your purposes.

But other than the class itself, which was the second time I’ve taken this full-day Master class from Margie, the weekend was a wonderful experience.Β  Meals were included, so as a group, we ate together, worked together and on Saturday night, hung out together as two intrepid souls went on a wine and beer run.Β  (Thank you!)Β  It was total immersion into the world of writing.

I loved every minute.

I know I won’t be able to make RWA this year, so this was even that much more special.Β  There is nothing quite like the experience of sharing this with others who get you, who understand the issues you face, who understand what your struggles are…and who celebrate right along with you as the pieces start to fall into place.Β  The first time I attended Margie’s class, I left on overload.Β  The EDITs system is deep and indepth and I was still reeling from what it would take (I thought) to work through it and apply it to my WIP.Β  This time, all those lessons I’d learned the first time clicked into place.Β  I could see where they fit now and how to apply them. It stopped being so daunting.Β  I finally got it.

It also reinforced something that we all know, but often forget.Β  A lot of writing is rewriting.Β Β  One of the things I remember from a previous RWA conference was Susan Elizabeth Phillips saying “Give yourself permission to write badly.”

This system helps to give you permission to write a crappy first draft if you need to.Β  (Notice I said FIRST draft, not a crappy book.)Β  No one has to be perfect out of the gate.Β Β  And with Margie’s EDITs system, you’ll have the tools in place for draft 2 and 3 to bring it all into sharp focus.Β  In talking to someone else at the retreat who was feeling just as I had after the first class a few years back, I tried to help her understood that an EDITs program is about editing, not about always writing it that way in the first place.Β Β  As you learn and grow, the things you learn through the EDITs process will naturally become a bigger part of your inherent writing.Β  We all get better as time goes by and we build upon what we’ve learned.

Wow, sounds like you had a fantastic time in many different ways! I won’t be able to make RWA this year either, so I’m looking forward to my crit friends writing retreat and the one smaller conference I’ll be going on.

Also, I love Margie’s classes. I’ve taken on in person with her and one online and they were both fantastic! My problem has always been that I get too caught up in trying to make my first draft perfect (when it can never be!), but she’s helped a lot with that mentality. πŸ™‚

Ahhh! I’m so glad you had such a great weekend. I love writing weekends. Our chapter does a retreat in January.

As for first drafts, I need to allow myself that mind-set also of just writing. I’d get further faster. lol

Hi Stacey! I did, I really did. The picture was one I took, so just look at that ocean! I did not photoshop it in the slightest — it’s one of the few places on the Pacific Coast where the water is that clear, beautiful turquoise blue. Gorgeous. (Asilomar State Beach, if anyone wants to know.)

JK – I think I’ve learned something valuable about this year. If RWA National is out of the question, I definitely need to make up for the loss some way. Either more monthly meetings or a retreat like this one if possible. It keeps the connection, and when the week for National rolls around, I won’t feel quite so despondent at all I’m missing. LOL

Laurie — You and me both! If I could just stop the stupid editor inside my head long enough to get the (crappy) first draft down on paper, then I could let it go hog-wild in the 2nd draft. I have to master that ability. LOL

Jeannie —

I love the blog!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The writers at the Monterey Retreat were as fun as they were talented. I had the best time connecting with everyone and stretching brains. Loved how they added fresh writing and mega-power to their WIP’s!

FYI: This is my fifth year to support Brenda Novak’s Diabetes Auction. Please take a sec and heck out my 2011 donations.

The auction runs through May 31.

Margie!!!! Such timely finding of your comment here, since I’m busy right now highlighting away. That darn pink!! LOL

I still can’t believe how clear it is looking at the pages now. After I finish highlighting one, I look it over and can say, yup, this is missing X. (And sometimes Y and Z. LOL) I discovered so much about my writing this weekend again — THANK YOU! πŸ™‚

And I have to say – those items on Brenda’s auction are AMAZING!!! Definitely priceless!! (I’m still frothing a bit at the idea of your Immersion class.)

Thanks so much for everything — and a great walk on the beach to boot! πŸ™‚

Hi Robin. I was talking to someone today about the RWA National conference and thinking how much I’ll hate missing it. But this weekend at least fed my writer’s soul a bit. πŸ™‚

Margie’s body language lecture is amazing, too. REALLY good information.
