Summer ’09 Book Promo

by Jeannie Ruesch

Welcome to our new Author Promo feature called The Greatest Book Since…!

If you have a book out in this summer – June through August of 2009, tell us all about it below.  Or if you read a fabulous book that was out in this time frame, tell us about that!

The only stipulations:

1. Your book MUST have a semblance of happy ending. (See blog title.) It doesn’t have to be romance, but it has to have a satisfying ending where good things happen to good people (or at least the bad guys really get what they deserve).

2. Please include your book blurb, title, author, a buy link (if available) and your website.  Feel free to load up any great reviews you’ve received as well.

3. I recommend and encourage SHORT excerpts (and please keep them PG rated.).  Choose one so fascinating we have to know more…

Please note: If your post has 2 or more links, it will likely get caught in the spam filter and I’ll need to fish it out.  So don’t repost. Just be patient. Please.  (Pretty please.)

All or Nothing, by Ashley Ludwig
Print ISBN 1-60154-561-4

A widow finds love.
A soldier seeks redemption.
And a murderous bandit threatens to destroy them both.

RuthAnne Newcomb, a young widow starting over, nearly dies on the perilous winding road to Tucson, Arizona in 1876. The accident is a cover-up for a heinous crime at the hand of the murderous bandit El Tejano. Robbed and left for dead, all that remains for RuthAnne is her faith and her God-given talents. She needs both to endure the handsome, vengeful cavalry captain who saves her life.

Captain Bowen Shepherd offers aid in exchange for information leading to the criminal’s capture. El Tejano is bound to strike again, likely against the only living witness to his crimes.

Bowen and RuthAnne must work together and risk everything to unmask the bandit. Will their newfound love, or their lives, be the cost of bringing a murderer to justice?

Prologue
Normandy, France
Liz looked at the starry sky and prayed she’d find the British troops camp in time. The allied invasion began in the French region of Caen. And if the Nazi soldiers found her, she would never go home.
An eerie silence surrounded her. But she knew the enemy patrol was near. And they would arrest anyone involved in the invasion. As she rode Arnaud’s old bicycle down the dirt road, a breath caught in her throat. The calm June night didn’t bring her any comfort or joy. Every little noise brought her uneasiness.
Quickly, Liz changed paths and rode behind some trees and bushes. She heard voices shouting behind her. And their frightening dogs barked incessantly. Her heart hammered in her chest as she pedalled faster. “Over there,” one of the soldiers called out. They approached her way. Liz looked around her, finding a hiding place while they passed by her. The moonlit sky offered some light guiding her way through the thick bushes but it also did not help her in finding the perfect hiding spot.
The voices and barks grew closer and closer.
Liz covered her bicycle with a few leafy branches then she huddled in a ditch. She prayed the soldiers wouldn’t find her. She closed her eyes and saw Philip’s face, remembering the last summer they spent together with their families; so much happened since then. Their love grew into a magical reunion of two souls; an unbreakable bond. Now she had no idea if she would ever see him again.
Glancing around again, she could hear the German soldiers and their dogs a few feet away. Her heartbeat drummed in her ears. Her whole body trembled as tears filled her eyes.
Be brave, she repeated to herself.
Closer and closer still, the soldiers approached the edge of the ditch. Liz brought her legs closer to her trembling body, and she closed her eyes. “Philip. Please come find me,” she whispered.

3.0 out of 5 stars Historical Romance, August 18, 2009 By Jody Gore “www.romancingthepubs.com” (Louisiana)

Forever Yours is a romantic romp through Europe during World War II, continuing well after VE Day. This is an action packed story from the battlefields to the bedroom, with a lot of romance, a lot of tension, sexual and otherwise. Once I grew accustomed to her writing style the story flowed. Definitely a page turner!

Published in August of 2009, a book written expressly for horse crazy young readers:
Stormy Hill by Nancy Clarke
http://strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/StormyHill.com
Shahtani@juno.com
This is my first book in print. The following is a quote from the press release
It is an inspirational story of a young girl and her remarkable horse.
When fourteen-year-old Ann Collins’s grandfather died, he left her once-prominent family near bankruptcy. Now the fully-staffed horse farm in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, has shrunk to only the Collins family, their trainer, and the trainer’s son. Ann desperately wants to help her father return the family to its acclaimed position in the racing world and when Lightning, a well-bred black colt, is born, she knows that her chance has come.
Ann is a great rider but it will take more than just skill for her to make her dreams a reality. Even if no one else believes in Lightning, she knows he will be the one to change it all. Little does she know, she and Lightning will be out to the test much sooner that expected!
Wonderfully crafted with characters both relatable and lovable, this first installment in a series is sure to touch the hearts of all its readers.
Writing the ‘Stormy Hill’ series has been a lifelong ambition for me. Previously I have written many articles and columns for horse and dog publications, but this is the first fiction book to be printed. Now that I have retired from teaching I hope to spend more time working on the series. Three other manuscripts are completed at this time.

The Dream House Visions And Nightmares by Victoria Roder is a paranormal romance. It is a once in a lifetime and forever romance that comes in the form of a very sexy bakery owner named Brock Cooper. Brock offers Hope all the things her ex-husband didn’t, friendship, support, encouragement, romance, understanding and love.
Recurring dreams of a house Hope Graham’s family rented when she was a child, taunt her nights with images of a woman in a bloody nightgown pleading for help. Dream sequences of children metamorphosing into rats, blood spewing out of windows, and walking across decaying bones, foretell of sins of the past and forewarn of danger in the present. In an attempt to end the agony of her sleep deprivation, Hope travels to her hometown…only to discover that the truth can be more frightening than a nightmare.

Excerpt: The Dream House Visions And Nightmares, Asylett Press 2009.

I looked up and down the dimly lit street. There was no evidence of life. Nor were there any sounds. No dogs barking. No horns honking. No children playing. Nothing. I focused on the house-on its paneless windows, weathered boards and dilapidated porch sinking into a sea of overgrown grass and weeds-and nausea overcame me as an overwhelming moldy odor permeated the air. The look of the house didn’t make my skin crawl; it was the essence of it.
I watched the dilapidated house-it moved closer. Perhaps it lured me to it. I began to shiver. I looked down at the white cotton nightgown that I wore. Silk embossed flowers decorated the bodice. I was still straining to hear a sound when I realized, blood had saturated my gown until it had become a second skin.
I felt a tug on my gown. I looked down-Rae’s hair cascaded over her face as she clasped my hem through the fence. She pleaded, “Please, help me, please. Can’t you hear my children screaming?”
I struggled to get away…

Review from Fran Lee of the Examiner:

With chilling intensity and a fine hand, Ms. Roder weaves a tale that captures the reader’s imagination and keeps them spellbound until the final page. I read this novel in one sitting, and found myself trying feverishly to work out the puzzle boxes that the author has set into place, while rooting for the sweet romance that permeated the book with an infusion of delicious warmth, despite the icy suspense that held me captive.

Her main characters are strong and well defined, and, along with a marvelous array of secondary characters, gave this read a scary, amazingly spine-tingling overtone that kept me on the edge of my seat until the final shocking moments.

Can a budding love survive the horrors of a scarred past? Will the nightmares that make her think she is going crazy lead her to a thirty-year-old secret so painful she will not survive its discovery?

If you love sweetly delicious romance, and terrific ghost stories, you will love this one!

The Dream House receives a firm 8.5 on Fran’s Richter Scale for spine tingling suspense!

Well done, Victoria Roder!
